ON SCREEN — The board shows: 3/6 + 2/6 = ?

SAY (read this out loud, word for word): “Look at the screen. One half is the same as three little slices — that’s three-sixths. One third is the same as two little slices — that’s two-sixths. Now all the slices are the same size. So we just add them. Three slices plus two slices. How many is that?”

DO: Point at the two top numbers — the 3 and the 2. Let him say the answer. If he’s stuck, count with him out loud: “three… four… five.”

THE ANSWER: It’s 5/6 — say “five-sixths.” You add the top numbers: 3 + 2 = 5. The bottom number stays 6. Then say this exactly, in italics: “You just did it. One half plus one third equals five-sixths. That’s the one you got stuck on at the start — and you just solved it.” High five. Tap +5.

IF HE ASKS “why is a half the same as three-sixths?”: Don’t explain it with words. Grab a napkin or paper plate. Fold it in half. Then cut each half into 3. Count out loud: “one, two, three, four, five, six — six pieces. Three of them make your half.” Same pizza, just more cuts.
